JOSEFA DE ORTIZ DOMINGUEZ

Josefa de Ortiz Dominguez (1768-1829) known as the “Corregidora” (Corrector), a Mexican heroine and revolutionist.

Doña Josefa de Ortiz Dominguez was of Spanish descent which automatically placed her in the 10% elite population. She realized from a young age the disparity among the indigenous communities. During that time, Spaniards were in charge of the colonial government who oppressed these indigenous communities. Ortiz Dominguez began to organize exclusive literary meetings with other intellectuals. These gatherings would eventually turn to discussions to overthrow the Spanish government. There was a traitor among the group who  tipped off the Spanish government. Ortiz Dominguez  was held captive but managed to send out a warning to Miguel Hidalgo, a Catholic priest, who would lead the Mexican War of Independence.

 
 

CANTINFLAS

Mario Fortino Alfonso Moreno Reyes (1911-1993), a beloved Mexican actor and comedian. 

During the Golden Era of Mexican cinema, Mario Moreno also known as Cantinflas, rose to fame as an actor and comedian in Mexico. Admired by many, his character Cantinflas most commonly portrayed a marginalized dweller from the slums who used humor to shed light on social and political issues. One of Cantinflas’ most iconic trait was his bullet-speed banter, known as "cantinflear," where he managed to complicate a conversation while at the same time saying nothing of substance, gained tremendous popularity in Mexico and Spanish speaking countries. This popularization led the Real Academia Española to add the word as a verb in its dictionary in 1992.

 

FRIDA KAHLO

Frida Kahlo (1907-1954), a self-taught painter is considered one of Mexico’s greatest artists.

After a tragic bus accident, Kahlo suffered major injuries which left her temporarily immobile and suffering in pain for a few months. During her immobilization state, Kahlo turned her focus from medical school to painting.  Kahlo’s art contributions aided with Mexico’s national identity after the Mexican Revolution.
